The power of 5-axis wood machining

Innovations in wood cutting technology have allowed customers to dream big when posing projects to manufacturers. At GB Projects, we continually invest in our wood CNC services and currently have two 5-axis and two 3-axis machines, all of which are programmed from the office using state-of-the-art 3D CAM software. Here, we discuss 5-axis CNC machining, highlighting its features, differences, benefits, and capabilities.

What is CNC machining?
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining uses specialist software to pre-programme data which determine the complex movements of manufacturing tools in a multi-dimensional manner. A CNC machine carries out precision tasks such as cutting, routing and drilling to a level of 0.01mm accuracy.

What’s the difference between a 5-axis and a 3-axis CNC machine?
A 3-axis CNC machine is able to simultaneously move across three different axes to cut a material into the desired shape. A 5-axis CNC machine instead allows the cutting tool to rotate in a multi-dimensional fashion in five directions at the same time, which:

  • Provides the ability to manufacture complex projects with precision
  • Reduces the need for tool changes
  • Increases speed and replicability
  • Lowers costs with automatisation and efficiency

With two 5-axis CNC machines and our highly skilled operators, we offer consistent and top-quality CNC wood cutting services to meet the specific needs of our customers, many of whom come to us with highly complex and bespoke projects.

How we use CNC machining
This machinery allows us to tackle a wide array of projects and materials, such as solid timber, MDF, plywood and much more. We manufacture high volumes of intricate parts and products every day using our CNC machinery. You only have to see our recent projects to understand the vast capabilities of these incredible machines.

How CNC machining benefits our customers?
Because complex parts can be quickly replicated with extreme accuracy, 5-axis machining orders will always be the same standard. This also means a fast and efficient production of quality components whilst reducing waste with fully optimised material usage.
